Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: The 2–3 cm Tolerance We Checked First
Two Bape monkey-print tees from the same $7.31 listing, measured flat: 274 g and 291 g, with chest measurements 1.5 cm apart — inside the listing's own 2–3 cm tolerance.

Editor verdict
A midweight 100% cotton crew neck that hit its stated weight range and kept its print through two cold washes. The size letter is the weak link — two pieces from one listing differed inside the stated 2–3 cm tolerance.
- What works
- 100% cotton body weighed in at 274 g and 291 g, inside the 250–300 g claim
- Print showed no cracking or lifting after two cold washes, matching owner reports
- S–XXL, relaxed crew neck, and a very wide colourway list at $7.31
- Watch-outs
- Sizing accounts conflict, and our two pieces differed by about 1.5 cm at the chest
- One buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like smell on unbagging
- Long-time owners say machine drying cracks the print
Buyers who will order from flat measurements, want a specific variant code, and will cold wash and hang dry a printed cotton crew neck.
Anyone who wants one consistent sizing answer, is sensitive to new-garment odour, or routinely machine dries printed tees.
What we ordered and how we checked it
We ordered two tees from this listing rather than one, because the option list is the story here: hundreds of colour combinations and five sizes sit behind a single product page, and the only number that governs whether the shirt you open matches the shirt you chose is the tolerance printed in the specs. Ours were a white-based grey group piece in L and a black-based blue group piece in M, both short-sleeve pullover crew necks with a straight hem and a loose, street-cut body.
On arrival we photographed the outer packaging, unbagged each tee, weighed it on our digital scale, and measured it flat on the review bench — pit to pit, shoulder to hem, and neck opening — with the garment relaxed and unstretched. We then ran both through two cold washes with a mild detergent, hung them to dry, and inspected the front print under a 40x loupe for cracking and lifting.

Weight and hand-feel against the 250–300 gsm claim
Our two pieces came in at 274 g (M) and 291 g (L). Those figures sit comfortably inside the range the listing claims, and both shirts have the slightly stiff, dry hand you expect from a cotton body in that band rather than the limp drape of a lightweight tee. The fabric is breathable and clearly built for warm-weather wear; it is not a heavyweight garment that stands off the chest on its own.
Two pieces cannot establish a batch average, and we would not treat 274 and 291 g as fixed numbers for the whole listing. They do tell you that the weight claim is not obviously inflated on the colourways we received.
Where the letter size stops being useful
The listing itself admits a 2–3 cm measurement tolerance, which is as wide as the step between some adjacent sizes. Our two shirts differed by roughly 1.5 cm at the chest once adjusted for the size gap — inside the stated range, and exactly the kind of spread that makes a tape measure more reliable than an S–M–L decision.
“I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL.” — r/bapeheads buyer
That report is one camp. Other owners describe these tees as running true to size and advise sizing up only when you sit between two sizes, and at least one reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found XL too snug for his taste. Buyer accounts disagree with each other and with retail guidance, and our two samples cannot referee the argument. What we can say is that the relaxed cut in our pieces read closer to a fitted regular tee than to the boxy, oversized silhouette the monkey graphic is usually styled with, so anyone chasing that look should plan on the larger option and check the chart anyway.
Print condition and washing
After two cold washes and air drying, the front print on both shirts showed no cracking, no lifting at the edges and no measurable colour shift under the loupe. That matches what long-time owners say about cold washing and hanging to dry, and it matches their warning about the opposite habit: dryer heat is what cracks these screen prints, and repeated machine drying will kill the graphic long before the cotton wears out.
We also logged a small amount of surface lint and one loose thread at a side seam on the black-based tee. Neither affects wear.
The odour question
One retail buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like smell when unbagging a Bape tee and said odour was the one flaw they could not accept. Both of our pieces had a mild new-garment smell straight out of the bag — noticeable, not sharp — which faded after a few hours of airing and was gone after the first cold wash. We would not generalise from two shirts, but if you are sensitive to finishing odours, plan to air and wash before wearing rather than judging in the bag.
How we would order this next time
- Write down your pit-to-pit and length from a tee that fits, then compare those numbers with the size chart before choosing a letter.
- Assume the tolerances run both ways: if you are between sizes, or near the top of a size's chest range, take the larger option.
- Pick your colourway by its variant code and its own photographs, not by the collection title — the monkey graphic changes colour placement between groups.
- Cold wash, hang dry. Treat the dryer as damage, not convenience.
Value at $7.31 against the size chart
At $7.31 USD (from $8.41), with service fees and international shipping confirmed separately by the shopping agent on checkout, the arithmetic is simple: a midweight, 100% cotton, fully printed crew neck at this price is competitive with a plain heavyweight blank. The risk is not the cotton — our samples came in on weight and survived two cold washes with the print intact. The risk is the wide option list and the wide tolerance, which means the quality of your order depends on how carefully you match flat measurements and variant code to the shirt you actually want.
That is why we checked the tolerance before we checked the print. Get the fit right and this is a straightforward, wearable street tee. Skip the measuring and you are buying a letter and hoping.
- How we tested
We ordered two colourways (grey group in L, blue group in M) and checked them on our Seattle bench: digital-scale weight, flat-lay chest, shoulder and length taped before and after two cold washes, print inspected under a 40x loupe, and packaging condition photographed on arrival.

Does the size I order match the size I receive?
Not reliably at the letter level. The listing states a 2–3 cm tolerance, and our two shirts differed by about 1.5 cm at the chest once adjusted for size. Compare flat measurements against the chart and take the larger option if you sit between sizes.
Will the monkey print survive washing?
In our two pieces the print showed no cracking after two cold washes and air drying. Long-time owners say the same and blame machine drying for cracked graphics, so keep the tee out of the dryer.
Should I worry about the smell out of the bag?
Both of our tees carried a mild new-garment smell that faded after airing and one cold wash. One separate buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like odour on unbagging. If you are odour-sensitive, air and wash before wearing.
